SM series from JST is a fairly compact (0.1"" pitch) wire to wire connector that has a latch and works excellent for small signals and accessory power up to about 2 amps. Our experience is that an anderson connector with 12g wire is reliable up to about 60A of continuous current, but as you deal with 70+ amps (such as the phase current on a powerful ebike motor) then it's possible for the connector housing to soften and melt, resulting in an intermittent and unreliable contact. The only difference is the wire gauge for the pin crimp, and a heavier gauge wire can naturally handle higher currents. With Anderson Powerpoles, the pitting occurs at the tip of the connector pin, but as the connectors engage the contact point slides to a bump further back, ensure that there is clean and unpitted metal conducting.Ĭurrent Rating: It gets a bit confusing since Anderson has what they call a 15A, 30A, and 45A version of this connector, but they are all identical and interchangeable. On most connectors (bullets, spade, etc.) that pitting eats away the metal that is required for electrical connection. #3) Separate Making and Connection Contacts: There is a large spark that occures whenever a connector with battery voltage is plugged into a motor controller, and this spark will pit and damage the metal contacts. So whether you have 2 pins for DC power, 3 pins for the motor phase wires, 6 pins for a parallel battery harness, you'll be able to build up a connector block of suitable size by stacking the individual housings together. #2) Stackable with Dovetail Joints: The other great thing about Anderson plugs is that the housing has dovetail slots to stack side by side for making multipin connectors. It allows you to use the same plug both in the source and as a load. This means only one pin and housing is required, and you don't have the confusion that male is positive on one connector and female on the mate and visa versa.

However, neither of them are intrinsically waterproof, and they don't look as polished as many of the overmolded plugs that are in common use on ebikes nowadays and we are (somewhat reluctantly) breaking from our tradition and using other plugs too. Both these connectors have the advantage that they can be user crimped and installed with relative ease, the pins can be removed from the housing, they allow measuring voltage signals on the plugs even when connected together for diagnostics, and they are available in a wide variety of pin counts (2 to 12 with the JST-SM, and infinitely many with the modular Andersons).
